J.J. Kelso - a young journalist, developed the Society for the Protection of Animals and Children in Toronto in 1887, known as the Toronto Humane Society. This was one of the origins of the Children's Aid Society.

Jargon- The specialized or technical language of a trade, profession, or other group; it often is obscure to nonmembers. Social work has its own set of jargon terms which in many ways this glossary is defining. It is important not to use jargon in the helping relationship.

Jungian Therapy - Jungians view humans in a positive sense and believe they are inherently predisposed to make their individual mark in the world. However, this individuation process is not accomplished by merely obtaining fame and glory through material achievement or notoriety. Rather, to become truly individualized, humans must become transcendent and come to grips with the unconscious part of their personality. Individuals who fail to integrate full y the many oppositional forces of conscious and unconscious components of their personality will never fully develop to optimal capacity or achieve self-realization.

Jurisdiction - Usually a geographical area in which legal power is exerted.

Juvenile Delinquents Act - (1908, forerunner of the Young Offenders Act of 1964), set up separate courts and conditions for juveniles accused of crimes.
