Needs test - A test used in selective income security programs to determine eligibility based on the income and the need of the prospective recipient. Eligibility criteria define need which is then compared to the applicant's income.

Neglect - sustained deprivation of food, clothing, hygiene, shelter and other needed care so as to cause, or potentially cause, physical, emotional, developmental or psychological harm.

New world order model of international social work - This approach has its origins in the idea that the present world order is not very democratic at all, that it is controlled by a relatively small number of wealthy countries that manipulate the international system to their own advantage. Those who practice with this approach in mind are oriented more toward a fundamental restructuring of the global cultural, social, political, and economic structures.

Non-government organizations (NGOs) - NGOs are international organizations not directly linked to governments, allowing them more freedom in taking up important issues and bringing about effective change. NGOs also tend to be small dynamic groups that work on a variety of issues depending on their particular political or philosophical stances.

North-South divide - The economic world divides, broadly speaking, along North-South lines, the so-called North-South divide, with the countries of the First World awash in relative affluence and those of the Third World in abject squalor.
