Out-of-home services - Out-of-home services are implemented when the home situation becomes unsuitable for the upbringing of a child. These services include foster care; adoption; day care centres; community supports, for example, the Community Action Program for Children and Aboriginal Head Start; group homes; institutional care; parenting self-help and empowerment groups; and family housing assistance.

Overseas humanitarian programs - Churches and other religious groups and organizations have perhaps the most extensive variety of overseas humanitarian programs, and frequently they employ the services of social workers. These groups tend to operate in the poorer countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
